And the details of their lives\u2014St. Louis-Marie in\u00a0the 17th and 18th century\u00a0and Mother Seton in the 18th and 19th century\u2014have unexpected similarities as well.<\/p>\n

Louis was born in 1673 to a father with a strong temper in Brittany, \u201cLittle Britain.\u201d Elizabeth was born in 1774 to a father who was loyal to the crown in New York. Louis took the strong temper he inherited from his father, a notary, and channeled it toward directing people to God.\u00a0 Elizabeth followed her physician father\u2019s footsteps in working with the poor throughout her life.<\/p>\n

Their spiritual paths couldn\u2019t be more different, but their destinations are remarkably similar. Louis was a devout Catholic from early on, and entered on his journey to the priesthood at age 12 when he went to a minor seminary. He was ordained at age 27. Elizabeth was a devout Episcopalian who married at age 19 and bore five children before she was widowed at 30.<\/p>\n

Both died relatively young\u2014St. Louis-Marie at 43 and St. Elizabeth Ann at 46\u2014but accomplished a remarkable amount in their brief lives. Louis launched the Company of Mary, the Daughters of Wisdom and the Brothers of St. Gabriel, and his voluminous writing is cited as the inspiration for a number of organizations founded since then. Elizabeth established Saint Joseph\u2019s Academy and Free School, and then the religious congregation initially called the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph\u2019s. Today, numerous religious congregations\u2014and even the parochial school system in the U.S.\u2014 can trace their beginnings to Mother Seton.<\/p>\n

St. Louis-Marie\u2019s work comes with the highest Church approbation. St. John Paul II made his papal motto Totus Tuus,<\/em> \u201ctotally yours,\u201d a sentiment he directs to Mary, following St. Louis de Montfort. Pope Pius XII called de Montfort\u2019s way, \u201csolid and right.\u201d Pius XI said, \u201cI have followed this devotion ever since my youth,\u201d and Pope Pius X wrote the Montfortian way into his encyclical Ad Diem Illum.<\/em><\/p>\n

In fact, the spiritual path prepared by St. Louis de Montfort and Mother Seton is expressed in the Second Vatican Council\u2019s Lumen Gentium<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the years before this Council\u2014also known as \u201cVatican II\u201d\u2014theologians were fond of calling the Church \u201cthe Mystical Body of Christ,\u201d a favorite expression of Pope Pius XII. This phraseology was challenged in the lead-up to Vatican II by a different spiritual emphasis on \u201cthe People of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sin embargo, en Lumen Gentium <\/em>(Light of the Nations), the Council\u2019s grand statement on the Church, the two ideas live side by side, and find special expression in the section on Mary.<\/p>\n

Mary is \u201cthe mother of the members of Christ\u2026 having cooperated by charity that faithful might be born in the Church, who are members of that Head.\u201d But she is also our eternal destination. \u201c<\/em>By her maternal charity, she cares for the brethren of her Son, who still journey on earth surrounded by dangers and errors, until they are led into the happiness of their true home. Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked by the Church under the titles of Advocate, Auxiliatrix, Adjutrix, and Mediatrix.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is exactly what Louis believed. He loves Mary because he adores the \u201cEternal and incarnate Wisdom\u201d who dwells \u201cin the splendor of your Father from all eternity and in the virginal womb of Mary, your most worthy Mother, at the time of your Incarnation,\u201d he writes in Amor a la Sabidur\u00eda Eterna.<\/em><\/p>\n

Louis himself sums up his spiritual program this way: \u201cTo God Alone, by Christ\u2019s Wisdom, in the Spirit, in communion with Mary, for the reign of God.\u201d<\/p>\n

That focus on \u201cGod alone\u201d is what led both St. Louis-Marie and St. Elizabeth Ann to Mary\u2014and Mary pointed to God alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGod alone\u201d was Louis\u2019s motto, repeated frequently in his hymns, sermons and essays. \u201cI love you more with every breath \/ So how can I fear life or death?\u201d he wrote in one hymn. \u201cTo love you, Father, is to live and sing \/ The songs the angels sing their King. \/ God alone in every inch of me! \/ God alone! For all eternity!\u201d<\/p>\n

Elizabeth Seton\u2019s advice to a former student in 1818 was to \u201cSeek God in all things. In all your actions submit your motives to this unerring test: \u2018Will this be approved by God\u2019s all-seeing eye?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

St. Louis de Montfort and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton\u2019s devotion to the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph led them both to God alone.<\/p>\n
