Dicen que a veces t\u00fa eliges tu Cuaresma, y a veces tu Cuaresma es elegida por ti. Recuerdo cuando, hace varios a\u00f1os, ca\u00ed en esta \u00faltima categor\u00eda. Dif\u00edcil.<\/p>\n

One of my husband Dan\u2019s Christmas presents to me that year was a weekend getaway he planned for us in late January. We drove to Stratton Mountain in Vermont, stayed in a romantic room with a fireplace, woke up early on Saturday morning, and went skiing.<\/p>\n

We made it about halfway down the mountain before I took a hard fall and heard an unusual noise. That wasn\u2019t good. There was a hot, throbbing pain in my left knee. That wasn\u2019t good either. Dan held me by my arms and I tried to stand, but when I put weight on my left leg, it buckled beneath me. I wasn\u2019t sure how I would be getting down the mountain, but it would not be on skis.<\/p>\n

As it turned out, I got down strapped to a sled, lying on my back, with Mike from ski patrol \u201cdriving\u201d from the front on a snowboard. Mike was fast. We swooshed past hundreds of skiers as I lay there, staring up at the sky through goggles, with snow spraying my face. We swooshed, and I prayed. The familiar words of the Surrender Novena came to mind: \u201cJesus, I surrender myself to you. Take care of everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

Y se ocup\u00f3 de todo. Me diagnosticaron una rotura del ligamento cruzado anterior y me operaron poco despu\u00e9s. Mientras cojeaba por la vida con muletas, aprend\u00ed a ir m\u00e1s despacio y a pedir ayuda. Cuando cambi\u00e9 los tacones por las zapatillas y me puse una fea rodillera, aprend\u00ed a dejar de lado la vanidad.<\/p>\n

En los momentos en que esas peque\u00f1as cosas me resultaban dif\u00edciles de gestionar, a veces me re\u00f1\u00eda a m\u00ed misma. \u00a1Hay tantas cosas peores que la gente sufre en este mundo! \u00bfC\u00f3mo me atrevo a quejarme de un peque\u00f1o inconveniente mientras disfruto de mi vida de primer mundo? Y, sin embargo, sab\u00eda que incluso el m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o de los sacrificios, si se acepta con esp\u00edritu de generosidad y amor, unido a los sufrimientos de Nuestro Se\u00f1or, puede tener un valor infinito. La Cuaresma es el momento perfecto para practicarlo.<\/p>\n

Santa Serafina, cuya fiesta celebramos el 12 de marzo, fue una joven que dedic\u00f3 su corta vida a practicar precisamente ese tipo de sacrificio. Nacida en Italia en el siglo XIII, Seraphina perdi\u00f3 a su padre cuando era muy peque\u00f1a. Aunque era una ni\u00f1a bonita, contrajo una misteriosa enfermedad que no s\u00f3lo le caus\u00f3 mucho dolor, sino que la dej\u00f3 tan desfigurada que los dem\u00e1s sent\u00edan repulsi\u00f3n por su aspecto. Su madre cuidaba de ella, pero estaba ocupada con trabajos muy necesarios, por lo que Serafina pasaba muchas horas rechazada y sola con un crucifijo. Cuando su madre tambi\u00e9n muri\u00f3, Serafina s\u00f3lo ten\u00eda una amiga que la visitaba y le llevaba comida. Sent\u00eda una gran devoci\u00f3n por el Papa San Gregorio Magno, por lo que le rez\u00f3 para que le diera fuerzas para soportar los trastornos f\u00edsicos y emocionales hasta su muerte, el d\u00eda de su festividad, en 1253, a la edad de 15 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n

When Elizabeth was quarantined in Italy with her gravely ill husband in 1803, she wrote in her journal: \u201cMy eyes smart so much with crying, wind and fatigue that I must close them and lift up my heart. God is our all indeed. If sufferings abound in us, his Consolations also greatly abound, and far exceed all utterance \u2026 If I could forget my God one moment at these times, I should go mad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dios es nuestro todo. Si nos olvidamos de Dios, nos volver\u00edamos locos. Y ah\u00ed est\u00e1 la clave. Sea lo que sea lo que tengamos que soportar, sea cual sea el tipo de sufrimiento que Dios nos permita experimentar en nuestra vida, no debemos olvidar entregarnos a \u00c9l, acept\u00e1ndolo todo y uni\u00e9ndolo todo a los sufrimientos de Cristo.<\/p>\n

What that entails will look different for each of us, and it\u2019s OK to admit how hard\u2014sometimes agonizingly hard\u2014it can be.<\/p>\n
