{"id":201802,"date":"2025-04-30T06:33:12","date_gmt":"2025-04-30T10:33:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/setonshrine.org\/?p=201802"},"modified":"2025-07-25T09:06:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T13:06:15","slug":"mother-seton-has-always-provided-a-personal-connection-for-luci-baines-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/setonshrine.org\/es\/mother-seton-has-always-provided-a-personal-connection-for-luci-baines-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Mother Seton Has Always Provided a Personal Connection for Luci Baines Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>(serie 50 por 50)<\/em>\u00a0As the daughter of a president, Luci Baines Johnson\u2019s life has been intertwined with American history, so she was especially attuned to the canonization of Elizabeth Ann Seton as the first native-born American Catholic saint in 1975.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting your own American-born saint was a big deal,\u201d she said in an interview in 2021. \u201cIt was an exciting thing, especially when you thought about all of the discrimination that had existed in the United States when John Fitzgerald Kennedy ran for the presidency. It\u2019s hard to measure what that meant to so many young women who were members of the Catholic Church or interested in the Catholic Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luci Baines Johnson was first introduced to Mother Seton and her national Shrine in Emmitsburg when as a teenager, she dated a young man at nearby Mount St. Mary\u2019s University. In many ways, her life would track that of the saint she came to revere and then serve as the chair of the Shrine\u2019s National Leader\u2019s Council.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe question for me is not why I identify with Elizabeth Ann Seton, but how on earth could I not?\u201d she says. \u201cShe resonates with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Mother Seton, Johnson is a Catholic convert, wife, and mother. She\u2019s a successful businesswoman and philanthropist. Along the way, she has experienced triumph and tragedy, joy, and heartbreak \u2013 similar to some degree to the real-life experiences of Seton. Through it all, she says she has relied on her deep faith and a devotion to the saint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe all want somebody to identify with,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cWe all want to have our religion have a more personal connection for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, Johnson developed close relationships with the Sisters and Daughters of Charity, who trace their lineage back to Seton and remain committed to serving those in need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMother Seton tried very hard to help us,\u201d Johnson says. \u201cI think, really, what\u2019s especially important is for us to look at how important she felt that people on the margins were and how we need to love them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m just looking to do my part to help, and Mother Seton is a great help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<em>This is adapted from a story posted in 2021.
