{"id":218840,"date":"2025-07-25T14:43:53","date_gmt":"2025-07-25T18:43:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/setonshrine.org\/?p=218840"},"modified":"2025-07-25T14:43:53","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T18:43:53","slug":"a-bold-request-leads-to-a-lifetime-of-devotion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/setonshrine.org\/es\/a-bold-request-leads-to-a-lifetime-of-devotion\/","title":{"rendered":"A Bold Request Leads to a Lifetime of Devotion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by Bernardette Zappala, Ormond Beach FL<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>(serie 50 por 50)<\/em>\u00a0 My name is Mary Bernardette Johnson Zappala.\u00a0 My mother, Mary Isabel Cassidy Johnson, my aunt, Sr.\u00a0Francis Maria Cassidy of the Sisters of Charity\u00a0of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station NJ, and my uncle Father Joseph Cassidy were very involved in promoting the life of Elizabeth Seton, and one could say fully supported her canonization.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My husband and I were married in 1970 and had no children. Sunday, September 14, 1975, at mass I had a long conversation with Elizabeth.\u00a0 Quite boldly I told her, \u201cMy family has worked hard for you.\u00a0 Do you think you could do something for us?&#8221;\u00a0 Reading those words embarrasses me now.\u00a0 What cheek!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nine months to the day, June 14, 1976, our daughter Sarah Elizabeth Mary Zappala was born.\u00a0 Both my aunt and my uncle were there for her christening, with Fr.\u00a0 Joseph presiding. March 4, 1978, our son Alfred Bernard Seton was born. He has used Seton as his name since college.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My brother&#8217;s family lives in Chantilly VA, and I drive from there up to see Sarah in New York each summer. I have had a number of opportunities to take the back road to Emmitsburg.\u00a0\u00a0I continue to chat with St. Elizabeth, sharing my life (but less boldly). I too became a teacher.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My mother, aunt, and uncle have passed.\u00a0 Please pray for them as well as my family.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PS &#8212; I almost forgot&#8230; something from my past.\u00a0 I recall, probably around my first communion in 1947, I received a gift which stayed with me for a number of years.\u00a0It was a picture book of St Elizabeth&#8217;s life in black and white. Don&#8217;t know what happened to it, but I remember reading and rereading the pages a zillion times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>50 for 50 is a series of stories, quotes, clips, photos, and\/or devotional statements from ordinary people to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the canonization of Elizabeth Ann Seton as the first native-born American saint.<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No kids for 5 years \u2014 then a saint intervened!<\/p>","protected":false},"author":79,"featured_media":218842,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"mc4wp_mailchimp_campaign":[],"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[4419],"class_list":["post-218840","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-uncategorized","tag-fifty-for-fifty"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
