When Elizabeth Ann Seton died in 1821, her daughter Catherine was the only child at home. Heartbroken by her mother’s death, Catherine left home and didn’t return for 21 years.
After traveling the world, Catherine returned to Emmitsburg in 1842 to reconnect with her roots.
On this living history tour, you’ll step back in time to 1842 and discover the life and legacy of Elizabeth Ann Seton through Catherine’s eyes, and other beloved friends of Mother Seton. See a glimpse of the tour on the video below.
The tour is available on Sundays from June 2 through August 18. It takes place at 12:15pm, 1pm, 1:45pm, 2:40pm, 3:30pm and 4:15pm. Tickets are $10/adult, $7/youth ages 7-18, and free for children 6 and under.
What to expect on the tour:
- The tour begins at the Visitor Center of the Seton Shrine and may last up to 75 minutes.
- This is a walking tour. While the homes and walk-ways are handicap accessible, some paths have loose gravel and can be uneven in spots.
- Children ages six and under are welcome, however, we encourage parents to use discretion regarding whether this tour is a good fit for their young child. If a parent finds that they need to step out of the tour to care for a young child, they are welcome to return to the Visitor Center while the tour continues. Use of strollers is discouraged.
- The living history tour is a story-based experience from a first-person perspective. For a more comprehensive interpretation of the historic homes at our site, we invite you to experience the Historic Homes Tour offered Monday through Saturday.
